Are my sweet potatoes safe to eat? #948204

Asked November 07, 2026, 8:35 AM EST

When I pulled my sweet potatoes out of the ground yesterday, they were very dirty. Some are lightly cracked but not. I did scrub a cracked one and the dirt came off. Are these sweet potatoes safe to eat if I give them a good wash after I cure them? Or should I just toss them in the compost?

Expert Response

Hi Jen,

Yes your sweet potatoes are safe to eat. Don’t wash them before curing, and eat the cracked ones first. Cut away any withered, cracked or discolored parts.

Thanks!
