Zinnias #948149

Asked November 05, 2026, 1:25 PM EST

When I went out this morning, all my Zinnia flowers were gone. They are on the ground and something has eaten through the stalks just below the bud. This is on both old and new ones. Not a leaf has been damaged and I have looked under all the leaves with a microscope but cannot find anything. Their are no Snail trails and the plants are five feet off the ground in a fenced in yard in a city. Now I have been at this for fifty years and have NEVER seen this.

Expert Response

Hard to say for sure, but most likely an animal; possibly deer or squirrels. Look for tracks or droppings from an animal. You might also go out in the garden in the evening, at dusk, or very early in the morning to see if you can catch the culprit.
