Mushroom Identification #948100

Asked November 04, 2026, 1:52 PM EST

Hello, on my walk of the Thomas A. Dixon trail, I came across 2 different mushrooms. I spent some time looking up what the mushrooms could be, and I think the mushroom could be either a false matsutake or a button mushroom. I was wondering if you could identify the mushroom?

Expert Response

Mushroom ID is difficult in person and can be even harder through photos. Our pathologist says that it is not a false mastutake or button. Our best guess is possibly a type of Amanita. If you dig it up, you will see a bulb shape at the bottom of the stem. Most Amanita mushrooms are not edible.  We do not recommend ingesting any mushrooms though, without a proper and definitive ID.
