Are jack o'lantern pumpkins edible? #948020

Asked November 02, 2026, 1:59 PM EST

I carved my pumpkin on Halloween, but now the holiday has passed and I have an entire pumpkin sitting around that I don't want to go to waste. I have heard that these pumpkins are edible and good for stews and soups. What are your suggestions?

Hi Charlie,

If you haven't cut that pumpkin open yet, it is indeed edible. Pumpkins grown for carving at Halloween are safe to eat, but their flesh is often a bit stringier and less flavorful.

Once you've cut that pumpkin open, though, it's a different story. Cutting the pumpkin open allows for bacteria and mold spores to spread inside the squash and start growing. The clock is ticking for when it will spoil or be unsafe to east. Cut vegetables need to be cooked or cooled within a couple of hours of cutting, and jack-o-lanterns are no different. After you've set that jack-o-lantern out on Halloween night, it should not be used as food. Add it to your compost pile instead.
