Thanks for writing in! The language really can be confusing.
Volunteer garden work is a requirement of all Master Gardeners to maintain their certification, and is part of the training program. This is why you often see 'Master Gardener volunteer' instead of just 'Master Gardener.'
There are online courses you can take to receive the same training without needing to volunteer. You may find the links below helpful:
Not interested in volunteering? OSU Extension has other resources available to you to further your knowledge.
Maybe you’re interested in an instructor led, comprehensive, horticulture essentials course? Our Home Horticulture online course is a gardening essentials course that might be right for you. There are two options:
Maybe you’re interested in online university level short courses on specific garden topics. These year-round short courses are taught by OSU faculty and you can gain immediately applicable skills in gardening.
Maybe you’re not ready for a comprehensive gardening course and are more interested in specific garden topics? Master Gardeners offer many types of education for the public both at the county and state level. Build your garden knowledge with free or low-cost webinars, workshops and more.
Warmly,
