Cherry Tree Damage #946549

Asked October 05, 2026, 4:31 PM EDT

Hello! We have had a beautiful and thriving Cherry Tree in our front yard, here in Mankato, MN for years (not sure how old as we have moved in just in the last 5 years). There have been no visible issues with the tree as a whole (healthy bark, branches, and it always goes through a healthy cycle of buds-flowers-fruit-overwintering). This past weekend, 10/3/2026, half of the main trunk split and collapsed. It seems that maybe years of debris buildup in the "Y" section of the trunk caused decay and weakness? Not sure, but the wood everywhere else is very healthy with no signs of bugs or fungus. My question is if you think the other half of the tree is at risk of falling over the winter, or if it is likely sturdy enough to survive and get stronger next year. Also, if there is anything we can do to support the remaining tree or help prevent disease/bacteria on the exposed trunk. I have attached photos of the damage, as well as what the tree looked like in May 2025 for reference. Thank you SO much for your time and expertise! Sincerely, Harmony

Expert Response

Your tree split because it had a poor attachment that decayed over time.   The structural integrity is compromised. The tree should be removed.
