Hi there! I would love to plant a fruitless flowering crabapple tree in my front yard, but was a cautioned away from this after a good friend (currently an arborist-in-training) explained that she saw an established crabapple suddenly decline and die due to apple scab. I was a little heartbroken, since I'd fallen in love with a white-flowering, fruitless crabapple outside of our old apartment building. Now that my partner and I now own our first home, I was excited to plant a "Snow Queen" of our own. Also, this past spring we planted a newly-grafted Zestar apple tree in the backyard (she's looking great so far), and I was hoping a crabapple would be a "pollinator buddy" for it. My questions are these: Are crabapple trees particularly susceptible to diseases, such that it would be inadvisable to plant one? Are there varieties that are more disease-resistant? Are there actions we should take with our Zestar to help prevent disease? Am I taking my friend's caution too much to heart? Like I mentioned, I'd prefer a white-flowered, fruitless crabapple, but if there is another crabapple (different color, fruited, better as a pollinator buddy) that would be healthier in the long-term, I'd be equally happy with it.
