Zanthoxylum simulans isn't currently listed on the Mid-Atlantic Invaders tool, although the Maryland Biodiversity Project database, which records observations of all species present in the state, does have 13 records for this species across two areas (Montgomery County and Baltimore City). MBP notes that "it is not yet clear if this species is naturalized in Maryland."

We are not aware of any Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) or USDA regulations that ban this species from being sold and planted, although various other invasive species are being regulated by the MDA (and that species list is being updated regularly). We recommend inquiring directly with the MDA regarding the ability to commercially cultivate this species in the state, and if they have concerns about it spreading invasively.
