Is is too late to prune my overgrown oak leaf hydrangeas. They have just now started to fade. The height needs to be shortened and the lower branches need to be cut back to allow passage on a rather narrow pathway.

The pictured hydrangea is a Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata), not an Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia). The distinction matters because the former blooms on new wood (stems that grow the current year) and the latter blooms on old wood (stems that grew last year), so their pruning timing differs. Panicle Hydrangea can be pruned in late winter without the loss of flowers for that coming season. It's best to avoid pruning any shrub now (in autumn), as that might cause problems with winter hardiness or make them more vulnerable to winter damage. If you'd like to shorten arching/bending stems or need to get certain stems out of the way, however, that can be done now, as can the removal of spent flowers.
