planting hosta now? #943915

Asked August 31, 2026, 5:59 PM EDT

I have a row of August Moon hosta in my sloped front yard. A few of the hosta surprisingly did not come back this spring. Should I buy and plant more now (if I can find that variety anymore), or is it better to wait until next spring?

Expert Response

Hi Jane,,

You can plant hosta well into September

You mentioned that some hosta died over winter. With our recent dry summers and falls and unreliable winter snow cover it may have been from dehydration. With these plants growing on a slope, water them regularly right up until the ground freezes.

Thanks for the question. Good luck.
