Our front yard maple has much fewer leaves than usual this summer, many empty branches, the leaves seem smaller. It is usually a very thick canopy and this summer a lot of sunlight getting through.

I need a close up of the tree where it enters the ground from two directions with the top one inch of dirt removed.
I do not see a root flare. This would signify that the tree was planted too deep, a common cause of canopy thinning in maples. https://extension.psu.edu/are-my-trees-buried-too-deep
