Dembowski oak tree #939384

Asked July 15, 2026, 1:57 PM EDT

Dear extension center - Can you please review these pictures of our big oak tree, and let us know if having a few dead branches seems ok, or if we need to do something to try to save it.

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.  Oak trees have a tendency to shed smaller branches by itself which could be what is going on. Your tree looks healthy, but there are a few concerns that are present. I have circled them in the attached picture. These circled areas appear to be darker which could indicate sap leakage or the bluish streaking that could be a sign of Oak Wilt disease.

Now is not the time to trim or do anything to an oak due to Oak Wilt disease. But you should contact an arborist at Find an Arborist | TreesAreGood.org so that they can come out and determine whether your oak has Oak Wilt disease or if it is a normal shedding of branches.

I am including some references for you and if we can be of further help, contact us.
