It sounds like you have squash vine borers. If you have just the one vine you an go in and dig out the borers. Make sure that the vines have good soil contact. You can then bury part of them and they will root at the joints. Keep them well watered.
Look closely because you may find areas where they have already grown some new roots. You want to encourage them to grow these roots.
This fall, make sure you practice good clean up and put the vines in the trash or city compost. Do not compost them at home.
