How to prevent Golden Honey Locust from producing beans
McHenry County Illinois
Expert Response
Honey locust trees are generally dioecious, meaning male flowers and female flowers form on different trees. So, if you are getting seed pods, I'm guessing you have a female tree. Although, there are cases where honey locust can produce both male and female flowers (i.e., polygamo-dioecious), so keep that in mind.
If you are able to remove a pollen source (male flowers) from the proximity of you female tree, the female flowers will be less likely to be fertilized, in which case no seed pods would be produced. Alternatively, you can purchase or keep only male trees, meaning there would be no female flowers and no pod production. As I mentioned above, some trees can produce both male and female flowers, so some pod production may be unavoidable if you have one of those trees.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.
