KILLER WEED #936656

Asked June 24, 2026, 11:24 AM EDT

This WEED has taken over my gardens and spreading to my lawn.  Is there a weed killer that will not destroy my lawn, boxwoods and other plants and kill it?  I plan on ripping out everything in my front yard and starting over.  I will be keeping all my plants in my backyard.  After ripping everything out, should I spray roundup and keep spraying until they are all killed?  Should I remove the dirt (how much) before planting new shrubs this fall?  I need help!

Expert Response

This is bindweed, an aggressive vine that will spread and sometimes grow on other plants.

There is no weedkiller that will selectively kill bindweed without impacting nearby plants. I suggest trying to remove as much of the leaves as you can above ground. The plant has an extensive underground root system, and this will be a regular battle with removal of foliage. Adding a layer of mulch may help slow it from emerging but will not be a permanent solution.

You shouldn't need to remove the dirt. If the area is cleared, try removing as much of the root system as possible. Herbicide control would be most effective in late summer or fall.
