Magnolia tree #936512

Asked June 23, 2026, 11:45 AM EDT

Hi. I have a magnolia tree that appears to be dead. The branches are all black and it has no leaves. It did flower on one side of the tree this spring but now it appears dead. I just want to know if it can be saved or if I should have it taken down. Thank you in advance for your help.

Elizabeth,

It is hard to know exactly, but I have a suspect. There is evidence of black, sooty mold on the branches/trunk, which could mean that it was heavily infested by magnolia scale at some point. These creatures can occasionally kill branches and even whole trees. Other contributors could include winter injury, but right now I suspect scale insects at this point.

Right now, the prognosis is grim. You can check bare areas to confirm death. Dead branches/twigs will snap off if you firmly bend them, while live areas will have some spring in them. If the tree has lost more than 50% of its canopy, it is likely a goner, unfortunately.

Best,
Shane
