Maple tree #935678

Asked June 16, 2026, 8:32 AM EDT

I have a young maple tree that does not have very many leaves on it, wondering if I can give it any food to help it do better.

Stearns County Minnesota

Expert Response

Investigate why the tree has not leafed out. When was the tree planted? How old is the tree? Has it been well watered? Has damage occurred to the trunk, rabbits, deer, etc.?
Was a soil test done before the tree was planted?
See this web page and check the soil pH and planting sections. Young trees that do not do well may have not been planted correctly and the roots are not expanding into the surrounding soil. https://extension.umn.edu/how/planting-and-transplanting-trees-and-shrubs
