Expert Response
Are you referring to Tree-of-Heaven, Ailanthus? (We presume you're not asking about Bird-of-Paradise, which is a houseplant that some gardeners might put outside during the summer.) You can find removal method options for Tree-of-Heaven in the linked web page, which connects with a Penn State Extension resource that has detailed information about the ideal timing for each type of removal method. For larger trees, you may want to work with an arborist who can apply "hack-and-squirt" herbicide later this summer and then about a month later (once the herbicide has time to kill enough roots) have the tree cut down. Cutting down Ailanthus without first treating it with systemic (absorbed, root-killing) herbicide tends to result in it resprouting more abundantly than before, making the eradication attempt even more labor-intensive or time-consuming.
