Planting Lavendar #933403

Hi, A friend gfifted me a lavendar this year. I don't have a full sun spot taht isnt in directly line of a lawn sprinkler. I am tinking about putting it in a container on my deck, but the deck doesnt get full sun. Not the right plant for me I am noticing. Please advise.

Hi Terri,

Thanks for contacting Ask Extension about your lavender plant - such a nice gift from a friend! Lavender does very well when planted in a pot as lavender originated in the somewhat arid soils of the Mediterranean, so it prefers good drainage which can be controlled in a pot. So, you are correct that a spot directly in line with your sprinkler is not a good planting location. Terra cotta pots are probably the best choice for planting lavender as they drain well wicking away excess moisture, breath well and warm quickly in the sunshine.

Lavender does prefer 'full sun' which is a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to produce abundant flowers. Your plant will probably do fine with less sunlight and just produce fewer flowers. Perhaps you could find another location in your yard to place the pot where there is adequate sun light?
