Golden Hemlock? #932583

Asked May 22, 2026, 11:14 AM EDT

I am transplanting a golden colored pyramidal evergreen tree which is currently 6 feet wide at the base and 6 feet tall. Searching the internet with photos of my tree returns Golden Duke Eastern Hemlock as a match, however, the Duke only speads 2-3 feet. Do you have any guidance using the photos attached? Thank you.

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

This is an Eastern/Canadian hemlock (Tsuga canadensis). Attempting to identify a specific cultivar from pictures is extremely difficult. In the case of hemlocks, it often requires microscopic examination of the needles to do this. Given the color of the tree, at least one could say it is a golden or yellow-tipped cultivar. I can make three guesses: ‘Aurea Compacta’, ‘Everitt Golden’, or ‘Golden Splendor’. See:
