Hello, we moved into a new home last august that has 2 small trees with similar looking berries, but different looking leaves. My young children (2 and 7) are very interested in the berries and I would like to know if I should keep them away and clean the berries up when they fall so my kids don’t eat them? Or are these safe to eat? They look kind of like black berries. (2/2) I need to submit 2 questions to add all the photos.
Hi Chelsea,
Those appear to be a species of mulberry tree. There are both native and non-native species here in Maryland and they actually can have three different leaf shapes! You'll need to do a bit more sleuthing to determine what species you have there. The two links above will give you the specifics on how to determine which kind they are. The fruit of mulberries are edible and relished by birds, animals and people alike.
Hope that helps,
Marie
