Soil test question #928492

Asked April 15, 2026, 2:27 PM EDT

Which is the best soil test to do for a home garden and have tested at UVM? Looking for ph plus any nutrients that should be added to the soil. If we sent in a sample how long would it take to get results so we would know before planting mid May. Thank you. Hello Polly:

Thank you for reaching out to the UVM Extension Master Gardener Helpline with your question.

Here is a link to information on the UVM Soil Testing Lab. Click on the Forms link, and select the Vegetables for Home Gardens form.

Here's a helpful link on How To Take A Soil Sample.

I believe it takes between 7-10 business days.

If you need any help with interpreting the results once you receive them, feel free to open another helpline ticket, add your soil test reports as attachments, letting us know what questions you have.
