Trimming my crab apple #926944

Asked March 28, 2026, 9:59 AM EDT

I want to shape and trim my young crap apple tree. Can I trim all the branches without apples? Can I do it now? I’m in zone 4.

Expert Response

The branches without fruit are the newest branches and would likely fruit this year. The two branches at the top of the tree can be taken off. The other branches can be cut back for a better shape. Pruning can be done now. It is best to prune before it warms up because there aren’t many disease pathogens present now.
The link is to a short video about how to prune now and in the future.
