Saving a ficus tree #926761

Asked March 25, 2026, 4:25 PM EDT

I have grown a ficus tree for many years and it now tops 20 feet in height (see attached photo). Although in a large pot, it needs to be repotted and, frankly, I need to find a place where it can continue to grow unhindered. Obviously, I can't plant it outside in Michigan. First, I wonder if there is a place somewhere nearby that would accept the tree and care for it. Absent that, I have a radical plan. I am willing to put the tree in a rental truck and drive it south to Florida and plant the tree. First, I would ask what the likelihood is that the tree could be successfully transplanted and then grow in Florida. Second, if this option is feasible, is there any organization in Florida you know of that would assist with the replanting and/or the locating of a place to replant the ficus? Thank you.

It looks like it's been well cared for, but the size also means it is going to be a challenge to find someone with the equipment to move it.

Consider reaching out to Planterra if they have local suggestions for rehoming the tree. They are a local indoor conservatory.

If you were to transport it in a truck to Florida, it would most likely do ok for a few days without light as long as it does not get too hot inside the trailer. I'm not sure of organizations in Florida that would assist. If you do put it in the ground, it would need to be hardened off for best success (keeping it outdoors in partial sunlight for a few days, then in more direct sun for a few days before transplanting into the ground).
