Good Morning,
Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.
Please click on the following link about protecting trees in winter: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/protecting-trees-and-shrubs-winter#how-to-reduce-evergreen-winter-injury-1264311 If you scroll down, there is a section on protecting evergreens.
The damage happens when the temps during the day warm the bark which then begins to swell. However, when the sun goes down, so does the temperature which can then causes the bark to contract. That movement causes damage. For evergreen trees it is recommended to continue protection until the temps stay above 28 degrees.
Good Luck!
