Verticillium non-alfalfa #926154

Asked March 17, 2026, 10:28 AM EDT

1. Where is verticillium non-alfalfa available commercially in our area? I understand research began in 2019, and EPA Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division grants expedited process to biopesticides. PA and VA are using it as it kills the Tree of Heaven 100% of all growth stages fairly quick. If verticillium non-alfa is stil going through EPA registration review, the bioherbicide is expected to be available for field testing under an Experimental Use Permit. 2. Please advise how to obtain Experimental Use permit locally.

Queen Anne's County Maryland

Expert Response

To our knowledge this pathogen (Verticillium nonalfalfae) has not entered the biocontrol market to date, likely because of insufficient data that it cannot infect certain agricultural crops or native trees to an economically or ecologically damaging extent. However, you may need to ask the MDA about its status, the agency that would likely regulate any such product in Maryland, as it does conventional pesticides. The MDA would also be the agency to ask about obtaining any experimental use permits, as Extension is not regulatory.
