Asked February 04, 2026, 11:42 AM EST
Can you tell me if woven propylene is safe for use in organic vegetable gardens? As it breaks down over time are plants able to absorb any of its chemicals or makeup that could be detrimental to health?

Expert Response
In general polypropylene (PP, #5 plastic) is considered safe for organic gardening, as it is non-toxic, chemically inert, and does not leach harmful substances into the soil. It is commonly used for durable, UV-resistant plant pots, seed trays, and fabric grow bags.
However, if you want to avoid plastics, you can us an alternative such as cardboard to help suppress weeds.
