Four lined bug fall clean up #920590

Asked October 25, 2025, 6:45 AM EDT

I typically do minimal fall “clean up” since my yard is about 75% native plants. However I have had a four lined bug infestation for the past two spring- mid summers and would like to avoid that next year. Is there a time frame to cut down plants to get rid of four lined bug eggs yet minimize damage to pollinators? Thank you!

Thank you for reaching out.

If I were you, I’d do a deep cleanup this year.  If you know where your pollinators are hibernating, maybe leave those areas, but I’d clean up everything else and see if that helps control them next year.

Fortunately, the adults feed for only one month before “finding love”, laying eggs, and then biting the dust. There is only one generation per year. Because the feeding period of the four lined plant bug is so brief – and the damage is largely aesthetic – control measures are seldom warranted, though insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, and neem oil are moderately successful against them, especially if the product comes in direct contact with the nymphs.. Maybe plan on treating in May following label instructions.  Then you can pinch off the parts of the plant they fed on and it should grow back since it’s early in the season. Hopefully between the two practices you can get them under control.

I hope this helps.
